Susie - you just made my day having read all of the posts on this topic! Not that I'm happy it was operator error, but I am definitely happy that you were able to figure it out.
The templates are accurate. They have been tested and used successfully at least twice (by Lisa who made the Buttons and Blooms version of the quilt, and by me), and there are lots of photos in the Show and Tell from successful Month 1 finishers.
I'm thinking the circles are not laying flat because either the templates have not printed accurately (you need to measure across 4 squares to get 8" in both directions) in which case you will need to find a printer that does print accurately; or the seam allowance used is too big.
Given that I am English and spent the first 28 years of my life printing onto A4 paper, it didn't occur to me that the stuff still exists! I will make sure that templates for months 2-12 can be printed onto A4 paper as well as letter paper.

Hello everyone! I'm Lisa. I'm the lucky gal that got to make the "traditional" colorway of Sedona Star. I understand there are some troubles with adding the small border around the pieced center and pieced border of the entire center circle unit, is this correct?
As Sarah said, you need to be sure that when you piece your templates together, you're doing a really good job of measuring every square in both directions to be sure they measure what the instructions say.
Also, be sure that your printer is printing out all of the markings! One of my printers has a problem printing certain colors and when I first started out, my templates were not correct and I had to switch to a different printer (luckily I have four).
If you accurately print and piece together your templates, and accurately sew (it can be difficult with circular sewing and stabilizers on the back, I know) then you should have no problem putting the center together.
I didn't realize that I was a member of the forums, otherwise I would've been here to help out much sooner!<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://thatcrazyquiltygirl.blogspot.com">http://thatcrazyquiltygirl.blogspot.com</a><!-- m -->

I had another thought last night about what might be happening. Do a test to make sure that you aren't shrinking the templates when you are pressing the fabric. You definitely don't need steam - and if you're doing a lot of pressing with steam, chances are you're shrinking the fabric as well.

I will admit that on the outer ring I started out having the same problem it was trying to be a bowl and couldn't understand what the problem was for me. Then the light bulb went on and wellops:
ops: I was trying to piece the outside ring to the inner circle. Once I yes UN-SEWED it and did again mine was flat and not a bowl  I also ended up taking the paper off the inner star and it sewed into a nice circle

Hi
I just completed the center part, it is flat! I sewed the circle and the first ring together, then saw i should not have done it but, it was done so... When i printed the outer circle, i could then make sure the diameter of my first 2 parts would fit exactly into this ring.
I made sure to place a pin to align the marks and cliped the outer ring. I found it hard to sew this with the paper but i wanted to have the sewing line as my guide. I sewed the whole thing, with the outer ring on the bottom and went very slowly around it, lifting my pressure foot and repositionning the outer ring . Everything is fine, no bowl.
I am asking myself when should i tear the paper away? I would leave the paper on the outer ring but, i guess the rest should be remove. What do you think?
Did you sewed the circles yet? I was planning on doing them needle turn but not sure anymore.
Also, about the triangle in the hoop. i was under the impression Sarah was talking about the ones in next month...i might be wrong
I really enjoy doing this BOW, it is a challenge .

Hi Monique,
The triangles for month 1 are paper pieced - they are not done in the hoop at all. There has been some discussion from people wanting to do the month 2 blocks in the hoop.
As far as removing the stabilizer is concerned, definitely leave the stabilizer in the outer ring until the next part has been sewn on (in month 2). You could remove the stabilizer from the very center now if you like, although I left most of it on right until the very end.
Glad to hear that you have been successful with what you've done so far!
Sarah :-)

Hurrah! Eureka! Yay! I finally got my star circle and two borders together. If I was a blogger, I would be blogging about everything I am learning by doing this BOM. Since I am not a blogger, I will try to journal the information the old fashioned way, for my later use / enjoyment. Suffice it to say, my problem was operator errorops: with the skinny outer border. When I sewed it to the pieced border, I got the dreaded "bowl". All my unsewing, clipping, easing, basting, resewing did NOTHING. It turns out that my template construction was off (the joining of the six pages of stabilizer). When I reprinted template 3, and put it together correctly (!) everything worked out nicely. I hope to finish the triangles tomorrow, then I will take a picture and join the Show and Tell group!
