neutrals for sedona star

I would like to make this quilt for my son and his wife. when I showed him the pattern , he thought that he would like it in a more subduded colour. Dear Alex as you are the queen of neutrals could you advise me on the shading, and the number of shades I would need.

Gabrielle, Alex is kinda bizzy right now, as her daughter is getting married in a few days.
You might be able to figure out how many values to use by the total number of fabrics listed in Sarah's directions.

Make sure to look at the alternate version of the quilt... it is made from more neutrals than the turquoise one. You might be able to extrapolate from the yardages needed for that colorway. It's called Buttons and Blooms and it has it's own yardage PDF.

HTH!

- and if you take a black and white copy of the fabric sheet, you can see the values/shades used in the quilt

HI,

Good suggestion for deciding values and shades> I have always wanted to do that so i have a question. when you print in black and white on the copier... do you have to use gray scales included or just black and white... any instructions would be helpful... thanks

I would suggest just try printing in black & white and see what you get to start with! If you want to save ink go to your Properties section of your printer and select 'draft', and then it prints out a lot lighter, but still usable - BTW I have an epson printer, so that is what it is called on mine. Sometimes you just have to try it on your set up to see, Good luck!

I would say the same as Rosemary, just try it. There are so many different options on different printers/copiers, so I really don't know what it's called on yours.

I plan on doing mine in neutrals too. Scrappy neutrals.

Following the buttons and bows colourings as the main guide, mostly because I like the increased contrast in this version, and I can already tell what shades should be where, BUT there are some parts of the Fizz shadings I like better, so it will be a combo of both.

I plan to choose fabrics from my stash, and some I'll have to buy, especially the darker shades. I don't have large amounts of any one fabric, but using multiple fabrics in place of each one on the BB colour scheme it should still work, but I may need larger piece of a lighter shade or two to use the same background for some areas. I'll divide my neutrals into darkmediumdarkmediummediumlightlight to help with choosing what goes where. With the dark as chocolate brown or rust brown going down to very pale creamy off white as the lightest neutral. I plan to have a splash of rusty burnt orange brown as a bright sparkle probably only in the stars.

I've only just started and have just finished the central star (no centre appliqued yet) and I've done the star points in 3 shades like the Fizz coloring rather than in one colour like Buttons and Bows, but it's a dark star with a light background like BB. Now to make a decision about what fabrics to put in the next ring and then the triangles.
