side-setting and corner-setting triangles!

    side-setting and corner-setting triangles!

I find the maths of side-setting and corner-setting triangles impossible to do. It is so confusing because we start in inches with fractions, then we switch to decimal points and then back to fractions again! I could never do maths at school and this just makes my head hurt and I feel like a 12 year old again - it makes me want to cry with frustration! Could somebody please just tell me if this is right: if I have a 6 1/2" square do I cut a square 10 1/2" and cut it in four on the diagonals to get side-setting triangles? And do I cut a 5 1/2" square and divide it in half on the diagonal for corner-setting triangles?

Your math is right! You might find this link helpful. Bonnie gives a great explanation and a chart for the size you need to start with!

Thanks for your speedy reply Margo. I am sooo happy that I have finally got it right. I spend a very frustrating evening and morning this morning trying to figure it out. Whoever knew that there would be so much maths in making a quilt! And thanks for the link I will add it to my favourites so that I always have it to check out.
