    Cutting Month 2 Backgrounds Bigger

I forgot to mention on Facebook LIVE today that you "might" want to cut the 4 background squares for the Hollyhock blocks larger than 10.5".

That is the exact measurement they will be when you get to Month 4 and join them to the cabin center.

With all the handling in hand applique, I like the background a little larger, say 11", then trimmed to the proper size, 10.5", after all the applique is done.

PROS: fraying of outer edges is removed in the trimming

CONS: you probably cannot get 4 11" blocks from one 11" x WOF strip, it would take an additional 11" square to get all four blocks.
The trimming after the applique is done must be done very carefully so the design is still in the proper place on the block.

I discussed all this in my Month 2 Blog post. Please read each month's blog before starting if you want the additional help it can provide:

Barbara, I totally agree with making the background blocks a little bigger. I do a ton of applique and it always draws it up a little
and by having that extra 1/4 inch all around allows you to bring it back to exact size. Jacquelines De Jonge always adds an
extra 1/4 inch on her paper pieced circles patterns for that same reason. She says it is always a little off, and it allows you to bring it back to exact size before moving on. I am so, so happy you mentioned about the cone flowers going over into the Hollyhock blocks.
I was thinking about putting a dragonfly in the area where it would have got covered up. Really enjoyed your Live presentation.

Thanks, Helen. I always have way more to say than time allows. The TV producer Shelly tells me to edit, edit, edit, don't try to tell them everything you know. That is what my Blog and this Forum is for. If people don't read that stuff, I can't help it.

What if it's too late..already started applique? How much trouble will I be in?

Not much trouble. Just be aware 10.5” is the size the blocks are when sewn onto the cabin. Take care to minimize any fraying of the outside edges. Mine were cut 10.5” and it all worked out.
