My Sample Quilt
I test the BOM patterns and instructions. Not having a kit this year, I used my own fabrics, of which there is a sinful amount. There are probably 80 or more fabrics here.
In early December I will have an Introduction/Fabric Selection blog to show my process.
For now, here is my version.Barbara Black

Barbara, Your quilt is stunning. The colors could not be more perfect.I really like how you made the vases all
in the darker colors and I get a gem stone color feel when I look at it. Lookin for to you Dec. fabric selection blog. I can't wait.
Bet you have a great time making that one. HelenWLast edited by Helen W.; 11-18-2021, 07:46 AM.

Went to my local quilt shop for Small Business Saturday. They have a lovely line of very bright reproduction type fabrics. I couldn't resist. Although I'll probably add to it as I go along, I've got a start toward this one, including a lovely white on white with tiny flowers for the background.Ellen Lindow
Barbara, is there any substitute for print and fuse lite? I can’t find it here in England?
Another product I have used that is very similar is C&T Wash Away Applique Sheets. That might be available at quilt shops.

Barbara, Love the 2022 BOM you made with your fabric. I don't like most the of the fabrics in the kit but your quilt has inspired me to rethink my thoughts about not making it. The fabric in the quilt kit makes the designs harder to see and makes the quilt too busy. I do prefer needle turn applique over piecing (except paper piecing which would be a toss up) and this is a good chance to do applique.Carol M

Carol M, I think the too busy feature of the quilt is a lot of its charm. If you want your garden to be more traditional, just look to Baltimore Album type colorings. A uniform background in a light color or
one of my favorite (black) just makes the colors POP. I plan to use jewel tone colors and have not
yet decided on a background. I posted my jumping off fabrics from my Enchanted Garden on the
fabrics section. There will be so many variations of color palettes, I can hardly wait. HelenW

Carol, I agree the Australian look uses busier prints than I am used to. Using my own fabrics makes it my own. My blog tomorrow will show my process for picking my fabrics.
during the year I will offer “Optional Alternative Techniques “ for those who want faster methods. Including two paper pieced borders instead of appliqué.
please join the fun.Barbara Black

Elaine, another product Irene mentioned to me is Polyfuse. I have never tried it but she has. Google polyfuse for appliqué to find it.

Barbara, This is the first kit that I have ordered from The Quilt Show.
I read the introductory information where washing and drying the fabrics for colour bleed and shrinkage is recommended and that fabric has been allowed for this. After this step, is there enough of the background fabrics to cut the block pieces larger to allow for shrinkage that happens when hand appliquéing? I usually allow 1” extra to the background piece to be able to square the block.
Machine washing and drying is suggested. Is this what you would do?

When I pre-wash, I do use the washer and dryer. Express wash, about 30 minutes, with a Color Catcher sheet in the wash. I use a warm dryer and don't let them get bone dry. I fold them from the dryer and press when ready to use.
Yes, all the backgrounds are cut larger than the finished size--the instructions tell us exactly how large to cut each background and what size to trim them down to when the applique is complete.
