    This quilt has a story...

(This could be long, so skip if desired.) Never thought I would have a quilt with a story other than it is pretty. I started this with many in January. Had no idea as to our path the next 6 months. We've been winter/snowbirds in Quartzsite, AZ for a couple years. This year in early February we decided on a whim to go to Kingman, AZ. We decided to look for a home here. Liked the community, wanted to stay, and we were not looking forward to returning to Salt Lake City, Found our forever home!!!!!! Bought and returned home to sell everything. I do mean everything (for me 2 older long arms and frames, 3 sewing machines, fabric-oh my, art supplies supplies and equipment, looms etc. I will stop, You get the picture). Hubby went through the same with tools, music items..........Any way here we are, Loving every minute. When Barbra posted the sky scraper parameters I became intrigued. The she posted the small houses/city and I knew what I wanted to do. This was our journey. So we live about 15 miles north of Kingman off Route 66. Arizona is known for its sunset to the west, but the sunrises can be very gentle and soothing to the east. I decided to include the AZ state flag. That made thins directional NSEW. I didn't want to be signal distress/disrespect by having the flag upside down. Then came the sunset and sunset which, that set the east and west. I have so enjoyed this journey. By the way we bought a 1968 Corvette Convertible that he is restoring, so I know the 70's are the beginning of all great things.

I love the story your quilt tells and how you have documented it in your quilt. You bring back memories of Route 66 - I have never traveled it in person but I did travel it in my childhood through the TV series Route 66.

I come from a family of quilters. My great-great aunt was a milliner and in approximately 1905, she made this crazy quilt from the scraps left from the hats she made. She gave it to my grandmother, her niece, who was also a quilter. There was also a pillow topper to go with it, and my aunt got the quilt and my mom got the pillow topper. Both my mom and my aunt were quilters as well and my mom had a piece of the pillow topper framed and registered with the Minnesota Historical Society. My cousin ended up with the quilt and I got the framed pillow topper. However, in downsizing for a move, my cousin (who didn't do a lot of quilting) gave the quilt to me! I ma by no means an expert quilter, but have done many quilts, ranging from art quilts to traditional quilts, and receiving this old quilt was extraordinary. It's a real treasure!
