Before I taped the template plastic to my pattern I cut out a couple of peep holes and added 2 more guidelines to help me line up the white strip as I mark the fabric. Hoping it will help me to keep my road even.

Here is what it looks like as I am cutting the pieces. I made my extra guidelines at 1/4". Wishing I would have made them at 3/16" instead so they would match the 3/8" white strip exactly.

Nancy Lee, what a good idea, I think I will try that. I am signed in but not able to comment or quote or like on your postings, so have made a separate reply.

Great idea! I'm going to try it. Are you saying that you suggest making the "window" height 3/8" to line up with the with of the while line in the road?

Yes - make the window 3/8" high. I cut 3/8" windows on my freezer paper as well and that is helping me line up the white pieces as I paper piece. May be more work than is needed but it is helping me.

I cut out small sections on the freezer paper patterns to show me where to align the white stripe sections.

              Hello Barbara,
Thank you for all your wonderful videos and information. I am on month 5 and am struggling. I have attached the road to the compass. I was curious to see if I attached the road to the inner circle if it would fit. I know you are supposed to attach the upper road to the outside of the circle before the inner circle. I have found that the inner circle of the houses is about four cottages too wide. That seems like a lot to “ease in”. I am concerned that my outer ring will give me the same problem. Do you have any suggestions or insights?
              Thank you so much!

Wendy, Did you check your printer pattern for an accurate 1 inch square. That was a common problem if it wasn't the seam allowance sizes for people having problem with the roads fitting the houses. Four cottages is a lot, so I would say your printer might have made the pieces a little too big. What was the
diameter of your circle of cottages? HelenW

Thank you Helen! My diameter is 38 1/2 inches. The printing was accurate for the one inch. That process was something in which I was familiar. Back to my seam ripper!
                Have a good day!

It’s all about the seam allowances. Check every one to see where you are off.

Wendy, here is another post about the size of the center after the roads are sewn:

              https://thequiltshow.com/forum/block...oads-are-added

43.5" including seam allowances. You said your small houses circle is 38.5" so that is just right--the 5" of upper road will get you to 43.5" when sewn in place.

Thank you so much Barbara for the additional information! After re-sewing many seams, my lower road finally matches up (i.e. pinning) to the inner circle!! And my diameter, thankfully, is still 38 1/2 “! I really appreciate your support and encouragement. I am not as experienced as many of the people making this quilt; I am overwhelmed by the talent I am viewing on this forum. I could never have proceeded with this quilt, Barbara, without your wonderful videos, live presentations, blog, and this forum. Thank you!!

Wendy, isn’t it grand when things work? Figuring it out is part of the learning process. Good job!
