Prewashing the 2021 BOM fabric

I also cut the 45 degree angle, the washed in a machine with an agitator and had a tangled mess. Luckily, I only did a few colors. Wish I had seen your post before I washed.!!!

Thank you for tip to edge stitch before pre-washing. That worked much better for me than cutting the 45-degree angle. Th edge stitching dramatically reduced fraying. Well worth the effort.

You're welcome Kathy. It does make a big difference.
Cutting the corners (45 degree) works very well for standard quilting cotton. But shot cotton is a little different.

Kit fabric has arrived, time to wash. Followed steps to prepare fabric, 45 degree cut on corners, edgestitch edges, have the color catchers. Question is is laundry soap used or not needed?

I can't speak for others but I do not use laundry soap. Just water, generally warm or even cold water. I believe most of the shrinking happens in the dryer.

I plan to use this quilt as a wall hanging and would prefer not to prewash. Is dry cleaning an option for future cleaning, or would color bleeding be a concern with dry cleaning?

Was the orange in the kit a grunge, not a solid? I only noticed the splotchiness after washing. The others seem to be solid.

I don’t like to complain but.... I got my kit yesterday and was so excited. Came too late to start so got up early and divided fabric into light and dark.Used ruler to trim a 45 degree angle on the corners. Took to washing machine, which has an agitator and set machine to cold, delicate least amount of time. Added a color catcher. After 6 minutes load stopped. Opened top and fabric was in a wadded ball. The unraveling was terrible. Got scissors and started to untangle the mess. Put in dryer on low for 15 minutes. Have now spent almost 3 hours pressing and trimming the sides. Looks like I lost at least 1/2 inch of fabric on each side. I had never used shot cotton before and usually don’t prewash quality cottons. Did not do the darks. Wished I had not prewashed. Everyone will have to decide for themselves. Feel like I paid money for a trash can full of fiber. Use your best judgement. Looking forward to beginning houses. Hope it goes better than step one

Sorry you had so much trouble. I've learned with similar raveling on smaller cuts less then 1/2 yard, I put in a "lingerie" bag to put in washer and dryer with a color catcher like "Shout". I don't stuff the bag full, but I put a good many in. Then I put 4 bags in wash/dryer at a time & pull out & iron. There's slight raveling, but not all balled up.

The Kit fabrics list shows the orange is a shot cotton, Artisan Cotton. Only Duckling, the Cream, and the background are not shot cottons.

I'm thinking of not prewashing also. I usually don't prewash my fabric. I plan on using as a wall hanging and will probably just vacuum the dust off. The wall hanging is mostly darker fabric. But would be curious what others thought.

I also received my kit last week and also noticed that one orange and two yellows are were not Oakshott. They are Windham Palette my Marcia Derse. Picture attached.

I'm surprised there wasn't a note in the kits if fabrics were substituted. Mine had two substitutes (that I know of). Orange and Mustard are from the same manufacturer as the Duckling. Here is a picture of them along with the Duckling fabric.
I did just send a message to Customer Service. Not complaining, but suggesting that perhaps it would have been nice to have a small note in the kit to explain that a substitute was made.
