I am choosing my own fabric from local quilt shops. I have my background and following the same colors as the kit. I have many of my of the fabrics but, not all. I want to make sure I have the fabrics we will be starting with on January 1st - purchased washed - pressed and ready to go. I noticed from the 12/18 video that we will be starting with two sections.

Can you tell me which colors we will be using for the January blocks?

The canvas is NOT what is used in the Kit. The Kit background of Art History 101 is fine quality quilters cotton. Art History 101 in fine quilters cotton had to be reprinted expressly for The Quilt Show and that is happening now. I don’t expect it to be available anywhere else.

If you want those fabrics I recommend waiting for the new Kits, available very soon. Be sure you have asked to be put on the email list so you will know the day they are available. They will sell quickly.

Each Small House uses 4 fabrics besides the background: door, windows, roof and building. You decide whatever you want to use for each. We make a total of 16 Small Houses in Month 1, 8 number 1, and 8 number 2.

              Hi
I am very excited to get started. I am using bright colors to achieve a more modern look. The only think I have yet to decide on is the background and whether or not I do the same. CANNOT wait!

                  Their website says to pre-wash.

I’m wondering what others are thinking. I’m afraid I don’t like the busy background and have chosen a white with tiny coloured spots.
Now that I’ve seen how large the small houses are, and all the seams, I’m wondering if small prints would look better but solids for the windows and doors.

Given your solid background prints for the houses might work. Try one

My opinion is that the houses all being solids gives the quilt a cohesive look. But, fabrics that "read" as solids, like Grunge, marbles, mottled solids, tone-on-tone, would add a bit of interest but still be part of the whole look.

I have friends who plan to use some "architectural" fabrics--that look like bricks or wood, etc. A plaid roof would be fun.

Try a few to see what you think.

And not everyone loves the bold, busy print background. Your choice sounds just fine.

I am hoping to make a dent in my stash this year (!) I have lots of largish scraps and partial FQs in tone on tones but no solids, If I use one or possibly two subtle backgrounds do you think having each house in a potentially different fabric will be too busy?

Just my opinion, but I think it would be fabulous. The scrappier the better! Scrap up the green trees too. Trees are different colors.

I have all my supplies gathered together and am so excited to get started. This will be my first time working with shot cottons. I am mixing shot cottons with batiks. Batiks for the trees, the mariners compass, and the background. The background is white batik with random aqua dots. I bought lame bias tape to add some differentiation to the tree trunks.
