Freezer Paper Method Barbara Black mentioned

You mentioned the freezer paper method that you used in the quilt behind you in the 2021 BOM presentation you did today. I watched the whole program and I thought you had mentioned you were going to show us how you used just 3 pieces of freezer paper for the quilt in the background. I want to know how you did that. Is this something that will come with the 2021 BOM or are you going to show it somewhere else. Thank you. I really enjoyed today's presentation.

The freezer paper method will be demonstrated in the 2021 show January 1, 2021. I will also do a Live show on it the first Thursday in January.

But, because I was so excited about this method while making Color My World, I posted this Blog to show how it works—WITHOUT revealing this is the Mariner’s Compass from CMW. So, if you are eager, take a look:

    https://bbquiltmaker.blogspot.com/2020/06/freezer-paper-foundation-piecing.html

I followed up with how to make the background:

    https://bbquiltmaker.blogspot.com/2020/06/mariners-compass-background.html

Please note, this Mariner’s Compass pattern will not be available until February 1, 2021, for Star Members.

When you print the paper piecing templates on freezer paper in an inkjet printer, can you just feed the freezer paper into the printer or do you have to iron them onto a sacrificial piece of fabric first?

Pam, You can put it in the paper tray. No fabric or sacrificial paper needed if it is the freezer paper designed for printers. If you are cutting your own pieces from a roll you need
to iron to a regular sheet of copy paper. Just make sure you know which side faces up in the paper tray. Otherwise you might print them on the shiny side and that won't work.
Needs to print on the paper side of the freezer paper. Helen

I have a piece of paper with the word Up Side written on one side and a printed pattern on the other. I keep it near my printer. This tells me how I need to insert the freezer paper into my printer feeder. For my printer I place the freezer paper into my paper feeder with the glossy side up.

          Hope this makes sense.

my printer ate the freezer paper and it permanently fused the freezer paper to the regular paper so, just ironing it to a regular sheet may not work for everybody. I am ordering the heavy duty sheets now.

BTW, my older printer (now caput) would feed regular weight freezer paper just fine.

Yikes, good to know. Were you using a laser printer or an ink jet printer?

I guess I am having a hard time understanding why you use the freezer paper and don’t just cut the fabric to size and sew it together. Sine you don’t sew thru the freezer paper and have your fabric cut to size how does the paper help you? Please explain.

The fabrics are not cut to size. They are oversized to allow for placement on the paper patterns. Paper piecing allows for precision with very small pieces and/or complex designs like the Mariners compass center.

I've used the paper piecing technique many times and found it to be an excellent way of accurately piecing smaller designs. I'd never heard of using freezer paper but having now tried it, I think it's preferable.

If I choose to use the traditional paper piecing method, I.E. stitching on the paper, do I need to reverse the patterns or does it really matter?

I don't know if somebody else has already pointed it out, but the numbering order on House 1 is a little off. I assume the unnumbered portion is the first piece, then add pieces according to the numbered portions. The middle portion (the door) is shown in the instructions as the first piece (which is logical), but is numbered 2 on the pattern. The same situation arises in the upper portion of House 1 -- the middle portion numbered 2 should be the first piece. I think it's correct in the instructions, just off on the actual pattern pieces.

You misunderstand the pattern. The numbers on the pattern are the seam order to sew. 1 is the first seam to sew, 2 is the second, etc. The letters identify the fabric pieces.

Did you watch the Show that started today? I addressed this in the Show and a previous video.

Both methods should have the wrong side of the fabric to the wrong side of the template so it should be the same.
