Fabric choices
Wondering about every one's fabric choices? In the intro packet, this quilt calls for 22 1/2 yds! Has anyone used fat quarters, especially bundled ones? And then supplement with stash, maybe? Or buy as needed to? I really want to get started (I know I'm late) but I'm conflicted about fabric. TYTags: None

Because the pieces are small there is almost as much fabric in the seam allowances as the top. So it does take a lot of fabric for this queen size quilt. This is the perfect project for fat quarters/bundles. Supplement with stash. The only decision I recommend you make upfront is if you want to use one fabric for all 40 appliqué backgrounds or a variety. Cut 40 squares for the appliqué blocks, 8” each. Then just start. You are not late—that will be next January 1, 2021, when that pattern is not available for FREE for Star Members. Jump in and start.

I have not started. My original plan was to use my batik fat quarters for all appliqué blocks. And then use khaki colored fabric with the batik for the pieced blocks. I have a tough time picturing how this will look. I love the original because to me it looks like confetti dropped all over the neutral backround. It looks happy and am afraid I’m going to lose that. Soooo I only have about 6 mixed yards of backround fabric. How much do you think I would need if I change course. Thanks. Ellen

Ellen, the kit provided 10 yards of light prints for background. You can easily mix and match backgrounds. Decide if you like the look of many backgrounds or only a few. Maybe the khaki for the appliqué blocks, and something a little lighter for all the pieced blocks. To get the confetti look you mentioned, be sure to have enough contrast between the backgrounds and print fabrics for piecing and appliqué.
Maybe cut out a test block of the khaki/prints to see if it gives you the look you want.

Barbara, So glad you gave Ellen the correct amount of light fabrics. I totally forgot I was planning on making a smaller version.
I was just remembering what I bought for my lights. Good idea about making a sample to see if she likes the looks. Another idea would be
to make the sample and run a couple more colored copies on the printer and get a real feel for more of them put together and the overall effect.
Love your Red, White and Blue quilt for Quilts of Valor. Great design. HelenWHelenW
