    Sizzle kit-Warm colors

    Hello,

I have received the 2019 kit and have serged all the fabric. I pre-washed the yellows and greens together, the reds and oranges together, and the black separately. I added a color-catcher to all the wash loads, thank goodness. The lint basket in my dryer was full of bright red fluff after drying the reds and orange. I had to vacuum it out.

I'm concerned about the dyes continuing to bleed.

I have done a little research on Retayne for setting the dye in fabric. But, you need a water temp of 140 degrees and it is not advised to be used in a front-load, or he washing machine (which mine is).

I also read about salt and vinegar setting the dye. Does anyone know if that will set the dye permanently?

My next step was to starch all the fabric, but I want to make sure the dye is not going to run anymore, before I starch the fabrics.

I thought about washing it again but then thought I would possibly lose some more of the color.

    I would appreciate any help.

    Thank you.

    Irene

Go to Vicki Welsh's blog and read her article on "Stop my bleed quilt". The technique she mentions really works. Since you only have yardage, it will be easier. I have used her remedy many times, as have other quilters. Let us know how it works.

I have been diligently working on the fabric to make sure it doesn't run anymore. I have had to soak each color, at least 3 times, before the water is clear. I noticed that if I have the water over 140, it seems to work better. I was able to get the temperature up to 145 degrees. The last soak I kept the fabric in for 24 hours. Then, I washed the fabric twice in the washing machine to get all the Dawn soap out. The color-catcher didn't show any color, however, the lint basket still had some orange fluff. I'm starching the orange fabric now, and will keep working on the other colors.

IT WORKS! But, it is a lengthy process.

Thank you again for your help.

I’m considering replacing the navy 4 1/2 yards in warm Sizzle quilt kit with the Circle Dot in upper left corner photo. Looking at my fabrics and the finished picture on the right I have a question. Will this print fabric take away from the quilt design? Does that navy fabric need to be replaced with another navy solid? I just feel the navy from the kit is very dull looking.

I think the navy Circle Dot would be fine as the wedge background. If you prefer it, use it--making the quilt your very own.
