Have you tried the ultimate marking pencil from Hancy? They do the Full Line stencils. I have used them and I think they are great. It is like a waxy/chalky crayon and it comes off with the iron.

That reminds me how about old fashioned white soap?

For one quilt I designed a circle with 4 dragonflies flying around it. I did trace that on regular tissue paper, pinned that to the quilt and then quilted it. It worked quite well.

Another time I used sticky, reusable shelf lining paper. Cut out the shape I wanted and then stuck it to the quilt and hand quilted around it or marked around it and machine quilted.

Oh Rosemary, that reminds me--one time I use a sliver of "Zest" soap(it is an aqua green color) to mark a quilt. That might work too!

I use Golden Threads paper a lot. I found that if you tape it to a piece of printer paper you can use it in an ink jet printer. I use this technique for some very complex quilting designs and quilt through it. Sometimes when the quilting is very close it takes some patience to get all the paper pieces out from under the thread, but I found tweezers and packing tape helps with that a lot. I quilted the area under the stairs with this method:
