Interesting question. The stockings that I made didn't have binding. If you like the look of binding, I think I would bind the tops and then bind the sides together, seeing if I could loop the end of the binding on the back of the stocking into a hanging loop. The reason I would do the top first would be so that the stocking would be flat when I was finished. I think I would like the way it would hang better. If you bind the sides first, then the top, then I think it might look a little funny.
Your other option is to use a separate lining. This is what I've always done.
And another option is to do like Rita says and just bind on the top.
Hope this helps!
Nancy

I have always added binding the way Nancy suggested. Bind the tops of the front and back first, then join front and back together and bind the sides allowing enough binding to form a loop. Sorry about the quality of this sample. I've done about 25 stockings in this mode; this is not one of the better ones, but it gives you an idea of how the binding was applied. The top binding on the stocking front is a little hard to discern because it is made of the same white fabric.

I've also made some Christmas stockings, but they are totally lined and much more labor intensive than using the binding to assemble it. I quilted the fabric first, then cut out the stocking shapes and added the toe, heel and cuff before sewing the front and back together (RST) with the lining, then turning it right side out. I can't remember the order of assembly, but the binding method certainly looks more straightforward. Yeah...I'm voting for Charae's method!

Obviously not meant to wear, but cute to hang! I've made them for the grandchildren and each of their fur babies and each one is totally different but they are all the same size! Wish I had taken photos....
