Lighting

I'm about to put new lighting in my sewing room (it will qualify as a proper "studio" once the lighting is in!) and want to find out the best products. I want Daylight or Natural lighting that will be in the ceiling and preferably in spots to target specific places - i.e cutting table, design wall, fabric storage, ironing board, sewing table, etc.

Any and all suggestions welcome. Thanks, Kathy

I have the daylight bulbs in my ceiling fixture. It looks like the same setup as florescent lights. The only complaint I have is that it is directly over my cutting table and so gives me a glare off the ruler when I am trying to line things up.

Have you seen ecoluxlighting? Their website is http://www.ecoluxlighting.com. Cindy Needham recommends them. They are a very thin led light that sticks to the harp space on your machine so that you have good lighting in that usually dark area. They are not cheap and I won't be ordering any from this side of the pond, but it's a thought.

Thanks, Rita, but I need light for the whole room. Over cutting table, too. Thanks, though, I have thought of small lights on the machine bed. So far, what I have is fine. Now...when the eyesight goes ....

There is a lighting thing with my machine that bugs me. There is a shadow of the pressor foot on the fabric right where it goes under the pressor foot. Even a clear pressor foot casts a shadow. I don't know how that can be fixed but I'd love it if it could be.

Lois, I remember that Sally Collins did something with an ott-lite, one of those small models that opens up. she laid it down on its side, close to the actual machine, so the light shone directly at the presser foot from the right. Eliminated shadows! i did that for years before I got the janome with the good lighting *and* the bendable bright light. If you have her precision piecing book there's a picture in there, I can't remember if it's on her video.

Definitely improves the quantity and direction of the light!

Yup! Thanks to Sally, that's just what I did, too! I have an older Janome, and I just slip the Ott light right into the harp, for smaller projects. Of course, that doesn't work for FMQ and I'm too cheap to spend $50 :shock: on the bendable bright light. I hope one of the Janome Horizons is in my future, because they have a light or two right in the harp area! Thanks for listening to your fans, Janome!

Loise, the light on my 1950s Necchi is almos non existent. I found this very affordable lamps at IKEA http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/ca.../series/18294/ I got a couple of each, The clamp spotlight and the work lamp. They do a really good job an you can change the direction according to your needs. Hope this helps

Great minds think alight (forgive the pun ) Limbania. I have exactly the same lights from Ikea. The clip on ones are great.

Kathy, I have two 8 foot florescent light fixtures above my longarm and Bernina area in the basement. They give me plenty of light. On the other end of the room I have just a regular light fixture that I want DH to replace with another florescent fixture. That would be over my cutting and ironing area. I like lots of light. I also have an Ott light on wheels that I can move around as needed, and 2 east facing windows.

Oh, Limbania, those are great lights! And, so much more affordable than the $50 one I saw at Festval, and also at my LQS! I'm thinking I need a couple of those! Thanks so much for sharing! (Of course, there are no Ikeas in Montana! I'll be shopping on-line or maybe I can visit one when I go to Festival in Houston. Wow! That could almost be as much fun as the quilt show!)
