    Need Help with Sampler Blocks

    http://nonniequiltingdreams.wordpress.com/2010/05/

On my blog I posted pictures of my blocks for a sampler quilt... I do not want to make a straight set quilt using my blocks. I need ideas for an interesting setting. I have the thirteen blocks her plus about 8 others. Sizes very 9 inch the smallest.... till about 20 inches for the largest.

I have 3-4 yards each of a pale gold metallic fabric for the over all backgroun and another 3-4 yards of royal blue swirled with gold fabric for the borders ( Thinking raspadoy style borders)

I am thinking I might use Ricky's method for sashing / borders he showed using the JANE SASSERMAN fabrics... I have a great fabric to try the techinque with... That would be used to bring my 9 inch block closer to size with the 12 inch blocks.

Ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Anna

    Any suggestions ?

Hi Anna, have you seen the quilts a number of TQS members made for Sue and Jack Garman? We'd asked for 7 inches live area and unfinished sizes of 9 inches square, and for the most part, that's what we got, but there were some odd sizes, so Liz Whitehead came up with an easy way to handle that. Here's the Flickr site where we posted photos: http://www.flickr.com/groups/suegfriendshipquilt/
If you click on "more" under the first set of images, then go to page 2, you can see Liz's layouts from EQ. One of the things we did was to make some small filler blocks to fill in the spaces where the block sizes weren't lining up. We also had a couple of blocks stick into the border (see the lower left corner of Jack's quilt) and that helped with sizing, too. in the EQ layouts, it looks like there is sashing, but we didn't use any. One of Liz's other tricks was to offset the columns so that we didn't have to worry about lining up seams! Good luck! I'll be eager to see what you come up with! Best wishes, Robin

That is kind of the look I will be going for so I booked marked the site. I also have been reading a series of setting books by Sharyl Craig who shows similar setting styles. I am leaning heavily toward very contemporary settings. OFF SETTING THE BLOCKS will be a must... I am not going to fight with trying to line up all those blocks.

Elizabeth Hartman shares her thought process on how she is handling a similar problem at this link http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/in-progress/ Even if you don't like her solution, it might inspire you to come up with one of your own.
