machine quilting ideas
Well, here's another UFO on the way to finishing ! This quilt is the product of an exchange of 6 in. batik sqs.by
my sewing group. We picked the pattern at a LQS while on shop hop 3 yrs ago, then exchanged for six months.
All are making essentially the same quilt. I'd love some suggestions on how to quilt it. DH says ditch it with smoke
invisible thread. Others have said stipple or all-over...what do you think out there in TQS land. :?: What about the thread ??
It really is black, bright and busy !

Wow, that is loud! - definitely not one to look at the 'morning after, the night before' I like it.
How about 'wine glass'/'melon seed' all over it and maybe change it up for the border. Definitely any fancy stitching would not show up too good, because the colours are too strong & changeable. But SID is too boring for words in my book (but then I have rarely been known to take the easy way out with sewing  )

You could follow Leah Day's 365 designs and put a different design in every block. Now that would be a sampler quilt if I ever saw one. Think of how much you would learn. Love the quilt BTW!Originally posted by idahoWell, here's another UFO on the way to finishing ! This quilt is the product of an exchange of 6 in. batik sqs.by

Marilyn - This is the perfect quilt to play with some of Pam Clarke's Designs with Lines quilting. She has a lot of ways for moving around in quilts like this, filling the sashing, cornerstones and blocks with cool designs, but keeping it all continuous line. Another thing to look at, along the same lines and Pam's stuff, is Terry Twists by Sally Terry. This is the design that Margo suggested for one of Rita's quilts on another thread. It makes a great texture, is easy to do and can be done as a continuous line across the quilt.
If you want to do continuous line throughout the quilt, then maybe black thread would be cool. It would be visible on the bright batiks, but would just provide texture on the sashing. If you want the quilting visible in both places, you might have to break thread or make do with visible "jump" lines in the seams. But then you might want a bright variegated in the sashing and black in the batik blocks. And if you want the quilting to not show up so much, just reverse the two. It comes down to whether you want visible lines or texture.

OK--I wasn't going to post because I just am not that great at coming up it machine quilting patterns' but I agree with Rosemary that a melon seed would look great on this quilt. I disagree with Rosemary--I think this quilt sings and isn't "loud", LOL. I would use a variegated thread that has bright colors in it and just have at it. How is that for contrary?

Rainbow No. 834 Crown Jewels from Superior Threads would be perfect for quilting this quilt Marion - if you ask me, which you did
What a beautiful quilt. I really really like it. The colours are perfect, it just sings to me (ha ha - or La La!
) As to the quilting I think that if it was me I would be going for something with curves to counteract the squareness of the pattern. I think that you may as well do an all over design because custom quilting will not show so much on this quilt as it is quite busy. Anyway, whatever you do, I think it will be beautiful and if it needs a good home, I know one 8)

Marilyn, I love this quilt!!
Those colors are bright, and it's fab! I wish I had made this quilt!
I once did a very bright quilt that had black sashing, and quilted it with black thread. it was kind of a thick thread and my quilting wasn't that great at the time. It was too much for the quilt. I think a curvy overall design would be great, either the wineglass design or something else. Just make sure that the thread doesn't overpower the quilt. It's such a beautiful quilt, maybe I will challenge Rita for the rights to this quilt if it needs a second home!
