I know you already picked your colors and are ready to go, but thought I'd chime in about thread colors on the back of the quilt. I love to use a bunch of different thread colors on the back of my quilts! I think it's so much fun to see the stitching on the back and make more designs that way. I made a quilt for my mom last christmas using an angel panel and I used a bunch of different colors of thread on the front and matched the threads on the back, and it's so cool to see the angel on the back through the stitching! I used a black backing so it would be even more pronounced! And if you really want to see what you can do with thread colors on the back (and front!!) of a quilt, look at some of Linda Taylor's quilts. Incredible!!

Originally posted by LPoullardI just finished piecing a baby quilt and am ready to start quilting. The quilt top is 3 rows across and down with white sashing between colorful blocks. I attached a pic of the top - hopefully, you can view it. My backing is a multicolored print. I know when stitching in the ditch to use a thread in the bobbin to match the backing. I plan on using white thread on the top. HOWEVER, if I want to do hand quilting in the sashing (or anywhere else) what color should I use since it will appear on the back? You shouldn't have two different colored threads showing on the back, right? HELP!
It's a great, bright quilt top! Reminds me of some I've made

Thanks, Nancy & Kathy. Yes, I went ahead with white on top and yellow in the bobbin - you can barely see the thread on the back. Since my husband just informed me that we are delivering the gifts to the mother-to-be (his daughter) next weekend instead of late August, I will have to forget the hand quilting this go around. But, in the future I won't worry about different color threads. I will definitely go and have a peek at Linda's quilts. I just started quilting after not doing it for 30 years and am amazed at how everything has changed! Thanks for your comments - always appreciated.

Linda, glad it worked out.
yes, quilting has changed! I can remember attempting to make a quilt in the 70's with calico fabric, templates, scissors, and no real instructions. Thanks goodness for rotary cutters! TQS has been a blessing to me. it's a true community that gives me encouragement.
I hope your daughter in law loves the quilt!

Wendy, no need to feel badly. We only know what we know, when we know it. Poly is only worse in a fire... cotton is really not that good in a fire either. Luckily fires near babies are very rare. Using a flame retardant batting (such as Dream Angel) cuts down on skin burns if it catches on fire as it doesn't melt or flame. This is the same concept as only using flame retardant fabric for babies sleepwear.

So essentially if your or any of the babies you have made quilts for are intending on wrapping themselves up in a quilt and sitting close to a campfire (I would say barbeque, but I don't think that will be happening anytime soon  ), you would be safer borrowing Rita's Son's woollen quilt, because wool slowly smoulders, and stinks horrid before it burns, where as cotton will catch fire more easily, and poly will melt whilst it burns. Seemples!

Well, over here people can't use quilts for babies until they are several years old, so mine are given to lay babies on the floor as a play
mat. So risk is not as great. In future I will look for that batting.
Hello Linda, nice to see you've popped out from behind the quilt  Took me ages to find a photo I didn't mind to much when I put mine up.
