I was given a number of ties that are already taken apart (yea!!), but I can't tell if they are silk or poly. Any suggestions for telling the difference when I don't have labels?

If you can pull out a couple of fibers from the tie, you could use the burn test. Silk will burn to a fine ash and smell like burnt hair. Polyester melts and smells like burnt plastic. Also, silk will catch on any rough spot on your hand. Don't think poly does that.

I bought Floriani “Dream Weave” many years ago after you showed a gorgeous silk quilt you made with it. It looks like it’s a tricot fusible. Could I use this for prepping the silk?

i admit to being nervous about what to do. lol. I've since decided to enjoy the process.lol. it seems labor intensive with washing, backing with fusible, etc. Except, I've gotten enthusiatic about how much fabric is in these older wide ties. I've decided to prp them all, cut as many squares, triangles etc. that i can and THEN decide the course of action. It just seems logical in regards to mystery quilt.ha. Good luck to all...Hope this helps confusion.lol

I have used ties in quilts before and really like the Fabric Prep.

          Hello,

I have a couple of very pretty ties (amongst all the silk ones) that are 100% polyester. Would it be OK to use these?

          Thanks, Deyonne

I have about 2 yards of dupioni silk. Do I need to wash it before using it in my tie quilt?
