    Neutral quilt with applique ideas

After watching Alex's Live on you tube, I googled vertical row quilts with flower and vine applique.
There are a lot of the ideas she was thinking about out there. I liked most of them. They had different
block and different flowers but the general idea has been popular. I really like one that had the appliqué
floating over the area of what would be the neutral blocks. I don't know the makers or the patterns.
Not sure if Alex will see this. HelenW

I definitely would cross over into the patchwork sections with the appliqué. I'm thinking of using the patchwork columns like a trellis and have vines go up, over, behind the "trellis" all coming from the bottom. See Helen's photo #1 with green vines. Mine would be more organic, not symmetrical to each other- lots of tendrils going off in diff directions.

Peg, That sounds great. It will be fun to see all the variations everyone comes up with. HelenW

I'm really looking forward to the Neutrals class (although because I do everything by hand, I will probably need to stick to Irene's project plus the too-many other WIP I have rolling).

I've pulled together a great Japanese (and other) taupe & neutral stash. This is a quilt I finished last year in memory of a dear friend -- about 2/3 Japanese fabrics. Alex's Neutrals book was really helpful to me as well with this.

Sonia, I love the variety of blocks. Big Fan of the "puzzle" of putting varied designs together. The darker border around the hexes makes it pull together. I'm not a brown-beige person at all so this project will be a challenge for me but looking forward to it. Peg

Peg, If you don't like neutrals all that much, maybe you could do the blocks and backgrounds in neutrals, and the applique
        in your favorite colors. HelenW

Thought of that (have lots of fabric left over from a Kim Diehl quilt in reds, golds, greens) but then thought I should accept the challenge! I took a photo of my neutrals and put into B&W mode to see the values- saw I needed to beef up my mediums, had tons of lights, and enough darks. Think taking B&W photo will be especially helpful for the appliqué, mixing in the gray and tan tones. And I can check the contrast against the backgrounds as I work. I re-watched Alex's neutral show from August and that is very helpful for ideas.

Full Circle for Alex. I went to watch the Elsie M Campbell show 407 and it started with Alex doing a layout for a neutral quilt.
Really like the layout process she used. Love how quilting just keeps going full circle. HelenW

Pinterest Finds that might interest you- 2016 Jen Kingwell fabric line arranged in a neutrals color wheel. Think I'll arrange my hoard to see my range of values. I'm heavy on the lights, need to think about how to use the mediums and darks for the appliqué. The Quilt is 'GROWING UP" BY Wendy Williams. Love the vines growing up from the base3 on outer boarder. Vertical panels have vines contained within so could do all appliqué and then join to the pieces columns. Really like the asymmetrical, organic feel of the vines.

                  Hi, it’s Noella from Quebec,
Here are my neutrals. I have waaaay more fabric than needed here, but the more the merrier, I say.
I may not be able to stay in the neutrals, and will have little splashes of color from the Kaffe Fassett fabric “spiral shells”.

My furbaby’s pic came up as inspiration, is he all neutrals?
The “Home Tweet Home” is also for placement inspiration.

Noella, It was really fun watching your koi fish embroidery project develop. Your lack of getting the fabric
thru customs into Canada was quite a unexpected happening that turned out great due to your
creative ingenuity . Love the bird house lines on Home Tweet Home. That would be really cute, especially if you added some birds between every other house. Not sure if I will be doing this quilt.
I am way behind on the stitching of my version of the BOM for this year. Your cat would look purr-fect on a neutral quilt. HelenW

When will the pattern be available? I am thinking probably on April 4th? Or will Alex be parcelling it out as she goes along? She mentioned a pdf that we can bye? I am in Canada so no, not ordered the fabric or paper copy of the pattern.

Alex said hopefully the end of this week or early next. Yes, it will be a download PDF file. I had the pleasure of proofreading it earlier this week. I think you will all like it.
