    Very Nice!!!

I have just started the Kaffe Mystery Quilt and have been quilting about 2 years. Decided to do this to practice, practice, practice my block skills as I have been delving into art quilts. I love to do thread painting portraits. Anyway, here are my three block thus far using the Brassica fabric as my color choice inspiration.

Question: when you are cutting fabric for these individual blocks, do you just cut out a section the size you need of that particular fabric for the block or do you cut strips then sub cut from those. Do you cut strips only if you know you will be using the rest of the strip in other blocks? Don’t want to run out of fabric if I cut strips which would be my first inclination.

Hi bmh8110 - I am cutting strips at the 3" width (background fabric) and then when only need a 2.5" piece, trim off that much. For the bold colors, I am being more thrifty. But I wouldn't cut out a square corner of a piece of fabric, as I feel the rotary cutter leaves a little tear or cut where I may not want it next time. I'd be sure to cut the strip at the larger size needed and then trim down. Hope this helps.

has anyone tried to piece the millstone block? I think the directions are missing something, border triangle don't match up for me and I have cut it out twice

I'm offering one suggestion to match up our seams carefully. After pinning the pieces together, I set my stitch length to a basting stitch and take 4-5 stitches across the 'matching point' that is most critical for lining up. I don't have the fancy pins Alex uses, by the way. Then I check the open seam on the right side to see how accurate it is. Then I go back to the regular length stitch and sew the seam fully. If I do the basting stitch a bit inside the seam allowance, I can then remove those stitches quickly and press the seam (I do mine open). I find this saves me time and gives me reassurance that the points/lines are accurate. We all know in quilting that we each find ways that work for us. I'm just offering this as an option. Good luck everyone!

Blocks 2 and 3 are completed using the Kaffe fabrics and colour wheel for fabric selections. This is a new way to make a quilt for me! I am hoping to gain more knowledge and confidence in colour selection.

I am using Electric Quilt for my blocks. So I just added some lines. Then I printed out the full block, with light colorss showing on a sheet of label paper, added registration marks and sewed. I am stitching all of my blocks by hand. Attached is the Golden Gate Modified pattern as a single sheet and as templates.

                          Enjoy!
