The LIVE just finished. It can take a few hours for it to appear on our website but will be ready to view almost immediately on Facebook and/or YouTube.com. Here it is on YouTube:

I found the video. She doesn't show how and when she removes the template.

In the video, Lynn Wilder said that appliqueing the heart was a bit more challenging, because she was going through 3 layers of fabric. Is there a reason why you wouldn't applique the heart to the little circle fabric, first, and then, cut and applique the little circle onto the larger piece of fabric? I'm interested in why you wouldn't do it this way...I am still new to applique.

Yes, you certainly can do it that way. Start with a hunk of fabric that will be the circle. Appliqué the heart on it. Then cut the circle the appropriate size so you can appliqué it in place. This allows you to be sure the heart is right where you want it rather than askew as can happen. And you can cut away the underneath fabric after doing the appliqué.I don’t usually do that now that I rarely hand quilt but you could.

I bought the kit but the Highlander R600531 Multi (.75 yard) is not in it. I have checked and double checked my kit contents, but it is not included. Is there more and can it be sent to me? Pam McDannold

Double check all the fabrics one more time, those who think a Kit fabric is missing always find it. If you are 100% sure it’s not there, contact customer service. [email protected]

I plan on doing the appliqué by machine, possibly using the starch method for a cleaner finish. Should I still use Terial Magic on the background square, or will the spray starch be enough? It seems like the TM might cause some thread tension problems. I plan to make a practice piece, but thought I would ask the expert. Thanks in advance.Last edited by Diane E.; 02-01-2025, 08:50 PM.

Diane E. I am not an expert but if it were me I would at least starch background fabric or a lot of times I just use Pellon 906 Featherweight fusible stabilizer on back of background fabric for applique. The
starch or stabilizer will keep the background fabric from drawing up a little with the machine stitching.
You may not need it. You could make a sample with a small circle and one oval attached to
see if it lays nice and flat with out doing anything. That way you would know. I think the reason
Lynn said cut 6 inch and then when done trim to 5 and 1/2 is because applique does tend to
pull in the fabric a little as it is stitched. HelenW

In checking out the applique I find that B,C,D and E are slightly different. Are they supposed to be different?

Mine seemed to come out as a reverse, so I have B & D with one piece of template plastic and C & E with the other piece of template plastic. I use Karen Kay Buckley's template plastic that can be ironed on without bubbling. I probably could have just turned the template over, but I decided it was easier to have 2 different ones. By the time I get the second one ironed, the first is cool enough that I don't burn my fingers getting the template out.

These were hand drawn so all you are seeing is slight variations in the shapes. I would pick the one I like best and make all 4 the same if I was doing these applique blocks.

Hello! Is there a difference in how well the fusible applique wears as opposed to hand needle-turn? I know the difference in how it looks but I'm wondering if one lasts longer on the quilt or has a sturdiness benefit.

I would think the needle turn would wear better especially if you wash the quilt. Raw edge works
great on art quilts and wall hangings that don't need washing. The fusible can get a bit of the ravel
look if washed and dried in the dryer. Also, I have had the fabric on raw edge pull away from the
stitching, leaving the stitching in the background and small areas without stitching on the applique itself when quilting next to the applique. Then I have to go back and top stitch over the edge
of the applique where it pulled loose and when you are in the process of quilting that is not a fun thing to do. HelenW

I am doing machine applique and thinking I may use embroidery thread? I have experience doing machine applique and normally would use cotton thread such as aurifi. I have read other posts about raw edge and do want to use a thread which blends into the fabric and is able to be washed,

Marjorie C. You probably could wash the quilt with raw edge applique if you washed it by hand in
cool water and laid it out to dry. I usually do a small zig zag stitch 1.0 - 1.5 and let the needle just
fall off the edge into the background. I would match the thread to the applique. One thing I don't like about raw edge is the white pokies that show along the edge. Normal fabric is printed on one side
and the wrong side is white or lighter. It sticks out like a sore thumb if you are not using a light
background. That is why I usually use batiks. They are the same on both sides. And lots of time
I couch a heavy thread over the edge and it gives a beautiful finished look. You could use a satin stitch
on the edge and that would totally cover it and would hold up to washing.

I don’t see how the heart fits in with the quilt. The circle fabric is so cute I am fussy cutting the circle to have a bouquet of flowers in the center and skipping the heart. Tell me what I am missing.

It’s perfectly fine to make the quilt your own.
-
Kay E. Lots of reasons to include hearts in a quilt. You love (heart symbol) quilting. It is Feb.
and hearts are very Valentine fun. A symbol that you put your heart into making the quilt. Maybe
Lynn loves hearts and thought it would be cute. Like Barbara said, make your quilt with blocks
that you love, I change all my quilts to represent things I love. I would say you did not miss anything. It is just a difference of what you think looks good and what the pattern is.HelenW
