Featured Quilt - The Handi Quilter Best of Show Award at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024

We've showed you some of the biggest award winners at the 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival, and now comes the biggest award of them all, Best of Show. Still Life by Chen Jing won The Handi Quilter Best of Show Award (Sponsored by Handi Quilter) at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2024. Chen's amazingly realistic quilt presents a simple scene, some teapots on a table, some food, surrounded by a frame. But everything, including the frame, is meticulously made and quilted to present the most vivid and lifelike scene. And don't even get us started on the back of the quilt, which features its own spectacular free motion quilted designs as well.

Chen says of her work, “I wanted to use silk to express a realistic still-life painting, including the picture and the frame. The realistic effect of the picture frame was achieved using embroidery by manually controlling it on a stationary machine. At the same time, I wanted to explore unique free-motion quilting to present different picture effects on the front and back of the work.”

This masterpiece is a highly detailed silk quilt measuring only 17” x 18”

Congratulations to Chen Jing!

Corrections for Last Week's Featured Quilt, Pathfinder

In last Wednesday's Newsletter we featured Kyra Reps' quilt, Pathfinder, and congratulated her on her winning The Grace Company Mastery Award For Traditional Artistry at the 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival. In all our celebrating, we mistakenly featured the wrong artist statement for her quilt. Here is the correct artist statement for Pathfinder:

“Every mandala is as unique as the person creating it. This quilt is made solely of turned-edge hand appliqué and each piece was individually hand sewn. I brought her to life with my free-motion quilting. Pathfinder, with all her colors and of course, her dots, just makes me happy. In a world that isn’t always so colorful, I hope you smile when you look at her, too!”

We apologize for our mistake, but that means is you get to enjoy Kyra's beautiful quilt all over again! Congratulations Kyra!

Our Big Batik Show Is a Big Hit!

Everyone Just Can't Get Enough of Batiks

Carol Moellers, Jonathan Evans, and Beth Evans are three batik artists that have captured the hearts of our members when they watched our new show. From explaining how to use batiks for appliqué, to showing the intricate process for designing a batik fine art piece, there is so much to learn and appreciate. Here is some of the outstanding praise these artists have received:

"What an outstanding show! Loved the Evans’ story and really enjoyed watching how they do batik. Very interesting, never gave thought to how many steps and time it takes to make a piece. Wonderful! Thank you so much for all you do to open our eyes to the many, many forms of textile art forms." - Lourdes R.

"How informative! So fun seeing the more traditional piecing and appliqué in contrast to the art designs of the Evans. Thank you so much for this show, love you all!!" - Marie M.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Out For A "Walk"

"Beach Walk" by Deborah Fell

Deborah says of her quilt, "Many years ago on a tent camping trip, my husband and I found a remote state park on a beach on the northern Florida Panhandle. For over three decades I have walked along that beach. This unassuming state park took our hearts and has never released them. My beach walk will continue long after I am gone. This beach will remain and will be a reminder to my children of the resilience and consistency of the ocean, and its power to heal."
