Featured Quilt - Best Original Design at AQS QuiltWeek Daytona Beach 2025 and Best Stationary Machine Workmanship at AQS QuiltWeek Branson 2025

At this point it's probably easier to count the awards that Janet Stone HASN'T won versus the ones she has, as she just took home another two at the latest AQS shows for her quilt, Filigree Calligraphy. Winning Best Original Design at AQS QuiltWeek - Daytona Beach 2025 and Best Stationary Machine Workmanship at AQS QuiltWeek - Branson 2025, Janet's beautiful quilt also took home The Gammill Master Award for Machine Artistry at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. Congratulations Janet!

If you've been following Janet's career, you know she is famous for her Alphabet series, which has twenty-six quilts with each one corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. This is the 25th, and Janet had this to say about how she wanted it to turn out. "I wanted to use linen fabrics and a collection of solid hand-dyed fabrics and incorporate a free-motion embroidered alphabet."

If you want to learn even more about the quilt, and Janet herself, be sure to click the Quilt Video tab once you're in the gallery to watch an interview with Janet and Bob Ruggiero where they discuss her life in quilting and she goes more in depth into the creation and inspiration of Filigree Calligraphy.

North Carolina Arboretum: Designing the Quilt Garden

This Isn't The "Garden" Variety Quilt You're Used to Seeing

The Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore, California, just down the street from The Quilt Show's own Alex Anderson, is famous for every year putting on their Quilting in the Garden show where they hang quilts from the large trees that hang over the nursery. Not to be outdone, the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, North Carolina actually "quilts" their garden, as they plant their plants to look like quilt blocks. Get a glimpse at how they do this in this video from 2022 showing how they're going to design the Quilt Garden for that season.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Better Have Your Umbrella

"Looks Like Rain" by Leni Levenson Wiener

Looks Like Rain is part of Leni's "Park Bench Stories" exhibit. Leni used a photo she took in Hong Kong as her inspiration for this quilt. In order to get that photo however, she had her husband pose in the background so that it looked like she was taking a photo of him instead of her true subject, the lady with the umbrella. When displayed, the piece hangs out an inch from the wall, instead of flat against it, so that it casts its own shadow.
