Who is Ann Horton?
Ann Horton is an internationally recognized quiltmaker living in California, USA. Thread work, embroidery and the unexpected use of non-traditional quilt fabrics are hallmarks of her artistry. Ann describes her connection to her art in the following statement: “Growing up on our family farm in Illinois, I was surrounded by the natural world, home arts, and quilting. Now living in the beautiful coastal mountains of northern California, I continue to be inspired by God’s creation every day. As a psychotherapist, I am keenly aware of how language shapes our interaction with our world. As an artist, that language expands into the visual and tactile communication of quilt art. I find that my art weaves together the various identities I have inhabited in my life. Every quilt tells some part of my life story. Nature, the celebration of song, the deeply felt emotions of faith, family, relationships, and life – all are fertile ground for my imagination and art.”
Ann began exhibiting in national competitions in 2002 and has since garnered over 200 awards in national and international shows, including AQS, IQA and the prestigious Husqvarna Gallery of Quilt Art. Her quilts have been published in numerous magazines and books such as the National Quilt Museum’s “New Quilts from Old Favorites”, “I Remember Mama”, Lark publications People & Portraits and 500 Traditional Quilts, the centerfold for The Quilt Life (June 2010), Australian Patchwork and Quilting as well as the covers of Quilters Newsletter Magazine (October 2007 and February 2014) and Machine Quilting Unlimited (Sept/Oct 2011). Her work has been displayed in galleries, film, and special exhibits across the United States. In February of 2017 a segment of her work was filmed for The Quilt Show (Show #2005). Her work is included at the Brigham City Museum’s 2017 International Quilt Invitational Exhibition. Currently exploring the intricacies of extended threadwork both “on and off the quilt”, Ann hopes to expand the boundaries of texture and perspective for which her quilts are known. “The medium of textile art offers a palette of color, pattern, texture and sculptured layers that are limitless in possibilities” – and this artist continues to explore those possibilities in her growing body of work.
