Outline Quilting

Outline Quilting, is a single row of quilting stitches that outline a pieced or appliqued shape, or another quilted design. Outline quilting can be done by hand or machine. This row of stitching around a shape will emphasize the shape. On piecework, the shape can be outlined inside or outside the shape. Outlining a quilted shape such as a feather will push down the batting around the shape and emphasize the shape.

Benefits of Outline Quilting

Outline Quilting emphasizes shapes on your quilt. It compresses the quilt top, batting and backing together. It's a simple method that can be done by hand, or by machine. On the machine it can be done both freehand and with a walking foot. Outline quilting is a great place to start quilting on your quilt top.
