Flip and Sew

Flip and Sew, also known as Sew and Flip, is an easy sew triangle technique. To sew a Flip and Sew square, layer a square on the corner of a larger piece, right sides together, and sew diagonally point to point across the corner. Press the triangle back towards the corner and you have a corner triangle. This method is used on easy half square triangle techniques as well as snowball blocks, flying geese and a host of others. There are varying methods to mark and sew those units, as well as times to cut away the the bottom pieces or leave them behind.

Benefits of Flip and Sew

  • Flip and Sew is a easy sew technique
  • Flip and Sew corners can be sewn twice for bonus half square triangles units
  • There is no need to stitch a bias edge with this technique.

What I Wish I Knew When I Started Flip and Sew

There are a variety of tools that you can apply to your machine sewing bed that have lines allowing you to skip the triangle marking.

FLIP AND SEW is much faster than cutting out the pieces and sewing across the diagonal on the bias. While there are often "scrap triangles", depending on the size you can toss them or stitch again 1/4" away from the cutting line, befor you cut away the corner, and have another half square triangle ready for your next project.
