Quilters Using "Banned Substances"

Ricky Tims, who was a judge at AQS Quiltweek 2022 in Paducah, went out onto the floor to seek the opinion of quilters and find out how they feel about the use of "banned substances" in quilt competitions. The Quilt Show would like to thank all of the gracious participants for their time in taking part in this survey.

Watch the video below and see if you agree with the interviewee's opinions. After watching, scroll down past the video to get another take on the subject.

In case you didn't already figure it out, no quilt featured "Banned Substances" at AQS Quiltweek 2022 because #itsaspoof.

But the show I remember the most was dead horribly smelly animal carouses. The volunteers and staff were appalled at what was shipped to them. They had to ship some back right away because they were too fresh.
Are quilters ready for something like this??
It was "art" Where to draw the line is interesting.

Art is art and should not be restricted. Call it freedom of speech. You don’t have to like it.

I would say, why call it a quilt? A quilt is a top, batting and backing created from fabric and thread. Rather than squeeze this kind of art under quilting, why not create a new category? Rather than dilute what quilting has always been, let’s...

Rather than dilute what quilting has always been, let’s embrace an off shoot of quilts as a separate textile art category.

I suppose I'm in the minority today, but I don't even like ink or painting on a quilt. Seems like "cheating" if the image isn't created from fabric and thread. I think there should be new, separate categories, such as "quilted art" or "quilted paintings"... or, as someone on the video suggested, a "mixed-media" category. My question is, is it a "quilt" show, or a general "art" show? I don't go to a quilt show to see wood and plastic and paint...
