DAR Museum: Making a Dress Using 19th-Century Dressmaking Methods

From the DAR Museum"Our costume curator and some of her colleagues are going to try some 19th century dressmaking methods in preparation for next year’s exhibition, “Sewn in America: Making, Meaning, Memory,” which will look (among other things) at the evolution of home dressmaking."

More from the DAR Museum:

"Before full-size cut-out patterns were introduced in about 1870, fashion magazines tried to offer patterns. Having to scale them up (as in the 1859 Godey’s Ladies’ Book example here) or having to trace multiple pieces which were printed on top of each other, would have been quite a challenge. But we’re going to give it a go!

We’ll let you know how it works out…"

Not something that just great great grandma did. At least I didn't have to enlarge it. t if I was use to drawing my own patterns, the shape of the pieces would have been helpful.
