The Top 10 Modern Bridges to Inspire Quilters - The Ponte della Costituzione Bridge

Capt'n John's search for Modern Bridges that will inspire quilters has brought him to Venice, Italy this week for a trip across the Ponte della Costituzione Bridge, or in english the Constitution Bridge. How does this bridge inspire the design aspirations of today's quilters? Read on to find out!

We think the Ponte della Costituzione Bridge in Venice, Italy will inspire quilters because of its simplicity. It is comprised of a single arch structure, somewhat like a single block in a quilt. Think of a simple nine-patch or a half-square triangle quilt and the beauty that can be achieved with just that one block.  Sometimes simple is the way to go.

Here are more facts about the bridge:

"Today, we embark on our journey with the magnificent Ponte della Costituzione bridge in Venice, Italy.

Construction on the Ponte della Costituzione bridge, also known as the Constitution Bridge, began in 2003 and was completed in 2008. This modern marvel was designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who is renowned for his innovative and striking architectural creations around the world.

The design of the Ponte della Costituzione bridge is based on a single arch structure, which beautifully blends modernity with the historic charm of Venice. The arch is made of steel and glass, lending an ethereal and lightweight appearance to the bridge. Its sleek and contemporary design stands in contrast to the traditional Venetian architecture, creating a captivating visual experience for both locals and visitors.

While the bridge's aesthetic appeal is undeniable, its construction came with a hefty price tag. The Ponte della Costituzione bridge cost approximately €11.6 million to build, making it one of the most expensive bridges in Venice. However, the investment was deemed necessary to improve connectivity and accessibility in the city, allowing residents and tourists to traverse the Grand Canal more efficiently.

Situated in the heart of Venice, the Ponte della Costituzione bridge connects the Santa Lucia railway station to the Piazzale Roma. This strategic location provides a vital link between the mainland and the historical city center, easing the transportation burden and enhancing the overall experience of exploring Venice's wonders.

The Ponte della Costituzione bridge was the first new bridge to be built across the Grand Canal in Venice in over 70 years. Its completion marked a significant milestone in the city's architectural history, adding a contemporary touch to its ancient waterways.

The Bridge has had some problems with people slipping on the glass steps and the need to accommodate wheelchair access. It also faced criticism and controversy during its construction. Some locals expressed concerns about its modern design, arguing that it clashed with the traditional Venetian aesthetic. Nonetheless, the Ponte della Costituzione bridge has become an iconic landmark in Venice, admired by many for its unique blend of modernity and heritage."

Stay tuned and come back next week to find out the next Modern Bridge that will inspire quilters.

My grandson, Nicolas, is going to college for a year in Toscana, just north of Venice. I will have to make sure he goes to see the bridge. He loves to see the nearby sights while he is in Spain and Greece. I've been to England once, but my children and grandchildren have outdone me!
