Quilters' Save Our Stories with Judy Dales

Judy Dales, author of Curves in Motion: Quilt Designs & Techniquespassed away recently. Her quilt, Dancing On The Dark Side of the Moon was chosen in 1999 as one of the 100 Best Quilts of the 20th Century. In this Quilters' Save Our Stories (QSOS) interview from the Quilt Alliance, she discussed with interviewer Le Rowell how she got involved in quilting from a young age, the first quilt she owned, and the challenges she faced in quilting, from doing challenging designs to writing a book about quilting and publishing it.

What are Quilters' Save Our Stories interviews you ask? "Quilters’ S.O.S. – Save Our Stories (QSOS) is a project of the non-profit Quilt Alliance. The project creates, through recorded interviews, a broadly accessible body of information concerning quiltmaking, both present-day and in living memory. Our archive for the original audio recordings and photographs is the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. QSOS volunteers from across the country conduct and transcribe these interviews. We appreciate their generosity of time and dedication to the project!"

From Quilters' Save Our Stories and the Quilt Alliance:

"Le Rowell interviews Judy Dales, a renowned quilter at a quilt convention. She discusses how she got involved in quilting from a young age and the first quilt she owned. She talks about the challenges she faces in quilting, from doing challenging designs to writing a book about quilting and publishing it. She discusses the personal and emotional aspects of quilting through an anecdote about the quilt she created after the death of her mother. Dales talks about her involvement in the White House Collection of American Crafts, created by the Clinton administration. She discusses various aspects of quilting, including what makes a great quilt, whether quilting is an art or a craft, and the future of quilting."

I have wonderful memories of my class with with Judy at Houston. She told me my pins were crowbars and get real pins. I still chuckle about the pins when I see someone with crowbars.
