Featured Quilt - The Master Award for Thread Artistry Houston International Quilt Festival 2025
Tonight is Preview Night for the 2025 Houston International Quilt Festival, with the official start being tomorrow, and we have another spectacular award-winning quilt straight from the show floor to share with you. Family by Yoshiyuki Ishizaki won the Master Award for Thread Artistry (Sponsored by AllBrands.com) at the show and has so many delightful things to admire that have been enhanced by Yoshiyuki's wonderful hand appliqué and embroidery. She says, "Adding embroidery to appliqué makes all the difference. It seems like the more effort that goes into it, the more gorgeous it becomes."
The 2025 Houston International Quilt Festival begins tonight with Preview Night, and then runs from October 9, 2025 through October 12, 2025 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. |

Hit The Mark on Making Quilted Mandalas
During the pandemic, 23-year professional machine quilter Dorie Hruska transitioned from teaching six in-person classes to offering 12-month pre-recorded courses focused on building machine quilting skills. Her Quilted Mandala Club gives students the opportunity to practice a wide range of techniques.
In our latest show, after covering essential tools, Dorie shares tips for adding dimension and texture to a mandala quilt sandwich by stitching a flower center, successive rows of petals, and row designs.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Baskets Full of Letters |

"Letter Carriers" by Janet Stone
Letter Carriers, won First Place - Mixed Technique at the 2013 Houston International Quilt Festival. Always a fan of basket blocks, Janet wanted to incorporate some into a quilt. Coming up with the title Letter Carriers before she even made the quilt, she had the idea of making bias strips and actually weaving them to look like baskets. Trying one and finding out it was not as difficult to execute as she thought, she proceeded with the project and Letter Carriers came to be. A play on words, like many of Janet's quilt titles, the baskets she made ended up holding "actual" letters, i.e. A,B,C, etc., so the quilt features literal letter carriers.
