Featured Quilt - The Innova Master Award for Contemporary Artistry at Houston International Quilt Festival 2025

The 2025 Houston International Quilt Festival begins this week, but the winners have already been announced. Perhaps you have seen some of them already. Maybe you'd like to see some more? Well, members of the TQS team have already visited the Houston floor and have gotten great shots of the award winners and more which we will be sharing with you.

First up is a quilt from someone you may have heard of before, Karen Kay Buckley. Karen's quilt, Color My World, took home one of the big awards at the show, The Innova Master Award for Contemporary Artistry. This stunning quilt has all the color and perfection you'd come to expect from from Karen, and just gives off a feeling of joy.

Karen says of her work, "This quilt started with the Bluebird block as a teaching project, and then I wondered if I could create a larger quilt with this concept. Each block contains a critter (insect, animal, bird). Some are hidden and others are obvious. After finishing the blocks, I designed the center and planned to include all the critters, but I could not find the right place for one of them. Can you figure out which one is missing from the center?"

We don't know which figure is missing, but we hope you can figure it out!

Get to Know the Face Behind These Amazing Portrait Quilts

Lynn Czaban, known for her art quilt portraits, began her quilting journey in an unexpected way—through a baby quilt class at the community center where she worked, a project that stretched over thirteen years. Traditional block quilting didn’t truly capture her interest, and it wasn’t until she attended a quilt show that everything changed. There, she saw a group of women gathered around their portrait quilts, and she was intrigued by how realistic they were.

Soon after, she joined the group, took online classes, and found a wealth of inspiration in images from the Library of Congress and the Farm Security Administration.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Ready for the "Dance"?

"Square Dance" by Mary Kerr

Mary had a fragment of a quilt top of vintage fabrics. Some places of it were coming apart, so she cut 10" squares around the damaged areas and pieced them into the green of the rest of the top. Once the repairs were made and the top was completed, Mary had it quilted by Kim Stotsenberg. The result became the beautiful Square Dance, which measures 43-1/2" by 43-1/2".
