Featured Quilt - Outstanding Visual Narrative at Road to California
Born to Be Wild by Sue de Vanny won Outstanding Visual Narrative (Sponsored by OC Sewing & Vacuum) at Road to California 2025. This visually striking quilting depicting three wild dogs was featured at last year's AQS QuiltWeek in Paducah, KY, and previously won The Janome Master Award for Innovative Artistry at Houston International Quilt Festival 2022.
Sue says of her quilt, "Born to be Wild captures the spirited resilience of African wild dog pups as they stride boldly forward, with hope amidst the struggle for survival. The distant, shadowy presence of an adult dog underscores the tenuous thread connecting generations. Webbed holes and intricate textures in the landscape echo the urgent plight of this endangered species, reminding us of the fragile balance in nature and the importance of conservation." |

"Midnight At The Celtic Garden" by Mary Olson and Garry Olson
After free hand drawing the initial concept for their quilt, Midnight at the Celtic Garden, Garry Olson went to his wife Mary with the hopes to begin making it. Once she saw what he had drawn, she told him that he was nuts and there was no way that was going to be their next quilt. She had no idea how she would quilt the points of the Celtic design and didn't know how to proceed. Garry told her that if they removed the points they would lose the whole purpose of his design. After taking the time to think it through, Mary decided that he was right and figured out how to incorporate them into the quilting.
