Knitted or Crocheted - Beijing Bouquets

Alex mentioned this group of elderly knitters in Shanghai who were tasked with crocheting lifelong mementos for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics athletes. There seemed to be some confusion over whether they were knitted or crocheted.

In Hebrew, the same word is used for knitting and crocheting, srigah. Just when you mean to say crochet, you usually say (translated) 'knitting with one needle'. Maybe there is a similar language issue with Chinese?
