How to Do Hand Quilting and How to Do Machine Quilting with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims

(Show 3003) Alex and Ricky team up to share the basics of hand quilting and machine quilting that they have learned over the years. Alex begins by discussing the tools needed and then shares tips for fabric selection, her preferred thread weight, rocking the needles and a trick for tying off a knot in the air. Then it’s Ricky's turn to discuss the importance scale and density play when choosing a design. Design ideas continue as he shows a no-backtracking feather doodle design and how to deal with managing the bulk of a quilt under the arm of the machine bed.

I learned a lot and appreciate the show. However, I would really like to see someone demonstrate machine quilting ON A LARGE QUILT. I can easily make lovely designs on a table runner or placemat, but show me how to do a bed size quilt. Every demo I have ever seen uses a sample sized piece.
Love the show!

I’m a lefty too. I really liked Alex’s demo of how to knot your thread. I used to be able to do this easily by wrapping the thread around my finger and rolling it on my thumb, but arthritis makes this not so easy. Alex’s method just made my day!

Wonderful. Ok, I'll get my first quilt out and do the feathers. I'm assuming that the feed dogs are down????

If it's free motion, do you still have to set a stitch length? When you do stitch in the ditch, do you do it free motion or do you use a walking foot??? Thank you again to both of you.

I always loved doing crewl work and cross stitch, but right now I have a trigger thumb so can't do it right now.

I saw the both of you when you were in Colorado many years ago and Ricky when he was here in Boise! Love you both!!!!

Thank you thank you thank you!

another great show. I rarely do hand quilting and am lucky enough to have a Sweet 16 sit down for machine quilting, but still enjoyed the whole show and learned some good tips. It took me 6+ classes over several years and lots of practice to get comfortable but well worth it. My breakthrough class was with Andrea Brokenshire on a small domestic- fabulous teacher!
