SAQA Showcases Oceania with Virtual Exhibition, 2021 Annual Conference
The latest collection from SAQA’s Virtual Gallery Program, Impressions of Oceania From Around the World, highlights this vast region that comprises thousands of islands in the Pacific Ocean, including Australia and New Zealand.
The collection showcases the work of 33 SAQA members, including a work by each of the three jurors, Jennifer Bowker, Sue Dennis, and Susan de Vanny. The varied subjects depict abstract landscapes, fauna, wildfire, and volcanic activity. The selected works can be viewed at saqa.com/oceaniagallery.
The Virtual Gallery Program is a new addition to SAQA’s overall gallery offerings, made possible by the organization’s new website. The Virtual Gallery offers members an additional opportunity to present work to the public and is crafted exclusively for online viewers. It is available to anyone who visits the SAQA website.
Want to experience more about Oceania? SAQA’s 2021 annual conference, Oceans Apart, Connected by Art, is a virtual event originating from Australia April 15-25. Attendees will take a deep dive into the region’s unique art quilts and textile art and enjoy opportunities to connect and network in new ways through the Whova meeting platform. Using this platform, attendees can even set up their own get-togethers.
The Quilt Show is a bronze-level sponsor of this event, which is packed with thought-provoking presentations. Conference highlights are:
- Austin Kleon, bestselling author of Steal Like An Artist, will discuss how quilting inspired his work and ideas about creativity during quarantine.
- World of WearableArt, the world’s leading wearable art competition, will take attendees behind the scenes.
- Presentations by Oceania artists will showcase the people and inspiration that make this region unique.
- Lightning Talks, the Spotlight Auction, studio tours, and online chat sessions with other attendees will deepen the experience.
- Attendees will have access to recordings for three months after the event.
Full conference details are available at www.saqa.com/virtual. This year, conference registration is $200, half the usual rate. While the conference is for SAQA members, TQS readers may join SAQA for $20 off their first-year membership by using the code TQS through April 9, 2021. Membership details and benefits are available at www.saqa.com/join.
