The Quilt Show Puzzle: "How I Got Over" by Sandra Johnson
Do a puzzle of Sandra Johnson's denim quilt, How I Got Over, inspired by gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.
When Sandra first set out to make her quilt, How I Got Over, she only knew an eighth or less about the life of Mahalia Jackson. Doing her research, she found out that Mahalia was one of the first gospel singers, but was shunned from churches for moving too much while she sang. Inspired by Mahalia's connection to the church, Sandra hand stitched scripture into the quilt, along with a flower that she says represents the Garden of Eden. Featuring an elongated log cabin block design, you could say that this is the house the Mahalia Jackson built, but it's actually a quilt.
