Quilt Blocks for Ukraine
Claudia Pfeil is asking quilters to send her 8 1/2” blocks in blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and she will make them into quilts for refugees/children who are fleeing Ukraine. This blog has been updated with new information as of March 14, 2023.
UPDATE (3/14/2023): Please read through the entire blog including all updates
We received many inquiries from Ricky’s interview with Claudia Pfeil regarding her Piece for Peace Ukrainian refugee quilts project. Here is additional information that Claudia has provided:
Binding: Size is 2 1/2 " cut out of blue and/or yellow fabrics, folded wrong sides together and pressed. The fabrics can be prints or solids (cotton fabric).
Length: As long as possible on a roll (so no specific length). The fabrics can even be mixed. Claudia states that mixed bindings look awesome around the quilts.
The address to ship to is:
Quilt-Studio & Galerie "Alte Brotfabrik"
c/o Claudia Pfeil
Ritterstrasse 183
47805 Krefeld/Germany
IMPORTANT: Please note on the label a value of only 1 USD (we all know it is worth way more!).
Include a gift/donation notice mentioning “donation/gift for Ukrainian refugees quilts”. Otherwise Claudia will be required to pay customs on even the shipping and value!
If you want to donate money, please use PayPal and send to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Money is needed to purchase polar fleece for backing.

UPDATE (4/6/22): Claudia has just updated her mailing instructions on Facebook. Apparently she got in trouble with the post office for telling people to list their quilt blocks as “humanitarian aid”. She can’t do that because she isn’t an organization. So she has requested that people list their blocks as “gifts” and that should solve her problem.
She also said to list the value as $1.00. She has received over 6,000 blocks so far and has had to enlist her friends to help her make the quilts. She must be a human dynamo with a heart of gold. Quilters from all over the world are being very generous.
Claudia writes,
Calling my friends worldwide: I will start a project, collecting blocks in 8 1/2"( seam allowance included), colors: blue/yellow ( Ukrainian flag), techniques: everything is allowed... I will sew and quilt one or more quilts ( depending on how many blocks I will receive), donate them to refugees ( children?) from Ukraine coming to Europe or whatever the future will lead me to. I am soooo absolutely devastated about the news that I want, no... I need to do something and the only thing I can do is quilt and ask for peace!
Your Claudia
