Featured Quilt - Spring To The Past with this Seasonal Quilt

Summer days are here, but that doesn't mean we can't look back on seasons past and how they make us feel. Whisperings of Spring by Yasuko Muto captures those feelings for the Spring season beautifully using wonderful instances of hand piecing, hand appliqué, and hand quilting. Designed by Kathy Nakajima, Yasuko put all that handwork to good use, as her quilt was a Semi-Finalist in the Hand Quilted Quilts category at AQS QuiltWeek - Paducah 2025, in addition to being featured in last year's Houston International Quilt Festival.

As to those feelings of Spring, Yasuko says, "When spring arrives at the foot of Mount Fuji, where my hometown is located, blooming flowers almost seem to whisper here and there at the start of a glorious season. I tried to capture this magical moment in this quilt."

Discover The History of These Quilts

From the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive: "Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California traces the flow and flourishing of quilts in the context of the Second Great Migration. As millions of African Americans sought greater opportunities and escape from the South’s oppressive racial environment from 1940 to 1970, they carried quilts as functional objects and physical reminders of the homes they left behind. The quilts in this exhibition explore the medium’s unique capacity for connecting kin across time and distance, holding memory and ancestral knowledge, and opening up space for beauty and artistic ingenuity."

Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California will be on display at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, California from June 8, 2025 through November 30, 2025.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Coming Apart and Together

"Unraveling" by Karla Overland

Unraveling is another of Karla's quilts that features a play on waves. It was made using fusible appliqué, because she likes to get things done fast and get results. Karla just lets the fabrics speak to her, and in the case of this quilt, it was created not using any particular challenge packet of Cherrywood Fabrics.

What To Do With Your Fabric?

Whether you've got a lot of fabric, or just a little, you still need to find a purpose for it (unless you just want to sit and admire its beauty, which we totally get). The Quilt Show is here to present you with one, two, ten, maybe even ten-thousand (okay, maybe not that many) ways to use that fabric from over 450 different shows and just as many teachers. Snip it, stitch it, dye it, put it on ice, there are too many ways to count. So find a way  that sounds fun to you, and then continue on from there!
