Featured Quilt - Best Use of Color at Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival XXXIV 2023

Aquarium #3 by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry won Best Use of Color at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival XXXIV Quilt Competition Heart & Soul 2023. While her quilt only won recently this year, the concept for it has been with Caryl for a long time. She says, "This quilt began with a small sketch made in 1989, shortly after returning from Australia and the Great Barrier Reef for the first time. I have kept the sketch for many years and have made several different interpretations of it. The shape of the fish bodies and tails are a kind of fantasy amalgam of many different species. The colors and patterns were inspired by parrot fish and other brilliantly colored tropical fish."

Diane Harris Shows You Cohesion With Scraps

Color, Contrast, and Cohesion Come Together

Working with scrap quilts requires a ‘glue’ to hold it all together. Diane Harris shares how to bring order and unify diverse fabrics with repetition, a single color, a theme or a bold striped binding to add that happy period at the end.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Taking The Steps

"Stepping Stones" by Kate Cox

Stepping Stones is a quilt that relates to Kate's son. When he was eighteen, Kate's son wanted to go to a place where they used to picnic as a family when he was younger. At this location, there is a stream with rocks in it where he liked to build damns. While visiting there, Kate's husband and her son started building a damn together and it was the first time she'd ever seen them doing anything cooperatively. During the creation of this quilt, Kate thought of this moment while making it and thought that the squares of the quilt looked like stepping stones, both the literal ones from the stream and the metaphorical ones her husband and son took working together that day.
