Featured Quilt - A Handmade Hawaiian Beauty
Moana Lani by Yachiyo Katsuno was featured in the Handmade category at the 2018 Houston International Quilt Festival. This exquisitely made Hawaiian quilt is just a big, blue wonder of beauty to behold. It is stunning to view on its own, but with a little bit context from Yachiyo a whole new world of creativity rises to the surfaces. She says, "Moana means "sea" and Lani means "heaven" in the Hawaiian language. I created the beautiful ocean using blue fabrics. Don't the dolphins, sea turtles, and sea shells look happy amongst the beautiful white corals?" |

"Faded Denim Jacket" by Cindy Wiens
Since her father was a minister, Cindy spent much of her time listening to sermons in church. During a sermon being delivered by the pastor of her current church, Cindy happened to look up at the acoustical tiles on the ceiling of the building. Noticing that they were square-shaped and had three different values, a light, medium, and a dark, Cindy took a picture of it to use as inspiration for her quilt Faded Denim Jacket. Using that photo, she sketched the design of the quilt onto a church bulletin she had near her to flesh out the whole concept. It was quilted by Darby Myers.
