Featured Quilt - Third Place Hand Crafted / Hand Made at Houston 2023

Reflection in Blue by Eriko Kubo won Third Place in the Hand Crafted / Hand Made category (Sponsored by Flynn Quilt Frame Company) at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. A perfect quilt for the Winter season, Eriko wanted the quilt to give off a sense of warmth while only using the chilling blues and whites of a Winter Wonderland.

She says, "Looking out of the octagonal window, there is a world of snow reflected in the blue. I wanted to express warmth while using only cold blues and whites. I was able to add glamour to the tranquility with a variety of materials. The cloisonne pattern quilted all over the sky is one of the unique Japanese auspicious patterns and represents happiness, so I wished for peace in the world and happiness for all people."

Textile Talks: Allyson Allen - Censorship vs Artistic Expression

Using Your Artistic Voice

Presented by SAQA, "Have you ever created a piece that captured an emotion or opinion you felt strongly about, only to be told it's too edgy or controversial? Do you struggle with watering down the context of your work, hoping for more widespread appeal? If so, you might be compromising your artistic expression and caving into censorship instead of using your unique voice to convey your passion. We'll talk about creating work that represents what's important to you as an artist and which venues are appropriate for which types of work."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Ready To Go

"Nourished" by Deborah Boschert

Nourished and its complimentary quilt Depleted were both made in the same style of composition, but created with each meant to suggest entirely different feelings. The Nourished quilt featured here contains growing colors and elements and is meant to convey a sense of well-being, while the Depleted version was designed to be more gritty and rough around the edges.
