Featured Quilt - No Need to Have a "Bird Day" When You See This Quilt

Bird Day by Galla Grotto was featured as part of the Women's Encyclopedia Exhibit at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. The Women's Encyclopedia Exhibit was designed by Galla herself and "based on cultural traditions throughout the world. It is her reinterpretation of myths, images, and symbols" and featured "portraits of her heroines, goddesses, fairies, muses, and female images."

For Bird Day, Galla wanted to express the relationship that humankind has shared with birds throughout time. She says, "Birds have kept humans busy for centuries. Man has dreamed of wings, watching birds soaring freely. Birds often became fabulous, and even divine, beings. They have always been considered a symbol of freedom. And the cage is its limitation. If the cage is open, it means a desire for freedom."

Do you love Galla's quilt? Do you want to see more of her work and learn about the exhibit in detail? You're in luck, because Alex's LIVE today features an interview with Lilo Bowman and Galla herself talking about all of that in detail from the floor of the Houston Quilt Festival, including more information on Bird Day and other similar quilts.

Pat Bishop Shows How to Abstract From A Photograph

Building A Barn From the Ground (Photo) Up

Using a photo of a barn as inspiration, Pat Bishop shares how to use an app that allows her to simplify the image to its basic elements in our latest show. This new and minimal design is sketched on parchment paper allowing her to focus on value and primary shapes such as the triangles, rectangles, and more when rough cutting fabrics that become roof edges, windows, and doors. The finished piece is not an exact copy of the original photo but a sense of the original picture.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Six Sides of Fun and Design

"Hexies" by Nina McVeigh

We love the use of the large "Hexies" in Nina's quilt of the same name. We are also intrigued by the way she finished the border in a hexagonal design and the use of her embroidery capabilities in the quilting of the piece.
