Featured Quilt - First Place Handwork at QuiltCon 2024

Coral Quilt: Stitched and Tied by Amanda Nadig won First Place - Handwork (Sponsored by DuckaDilly - Liberty Fabrics Supplier) at QuiltCon 2024. Amanda says of how she put her quilt together, "If I was going to try tying a quilt, I wanted to be very "over the top" about it. The straight lines of hand quilting were added to emphasize the interesting organic shape formed by the densely tied yarn knots. This quilt is very heavy! I found thick ivory fabric from an estate sale, once home to a woman who made altered wedding dresses, and paired that luxuriousness with other white and off-white fabrics in my found fabric collection. The ties grow and take over the space, but hidden underneath lies a pale radial design made up of improvisational pieced shapes."

Follow Cathy Perlmutter's Journey to Quilting

When One Door Closes, Another Opens, and Then The First Opens Again

When getting to know Cathy Perlmuttter, we learned that she always wanted to be an artist, but was unable to achieve her dreams initially despite her best efforts. As an art major in college, her grades were so bad that she switched to journalism because she found writing to be much easier. A very successful career as a journalist offered her the opportunity to write on a variety of health related topics, but it was an unexpected stop at a quilt show in Ithaca, NY in 1991 that brought her into the world of quilting. Now over thirty years later Cathy has become the artist she always wanted to be and loves uneven edges, playing with scraps, leftovers and mixing fun elements. Take a look at her quilts and follow her fascinating journey to becoming a quilter.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Fine "Frenzy" to Be In

"Flowered and Feathered Frenzy" by Susan K. Cleveland

Flowered and Feathered Frenzy is the piece that Susan would like to be known for, incorporating so many things that she loves to do including precision piecing, feathered stars, hand embellishing and more. Susan wanted to include the feathered star, her favorite traditional block, and daisies, which are her favorite appliqué, as a personal touch for the quilt. It is a well-deserved award-winning quilt, taking home First Place at the 2016 Houston International Quilt Festival, First Place at the 2017 American Quilter's Society Paducah, and Second Place - Minnesota Quilters 2016.
