Featured Quilt - The BERNINA Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Award at PIQF 2024

You may have heard of Kestrel Michaud and her fantastic quilts that combine fantasy, amazing quilting, and all-around fun. The One That Got Away, her latest quilt making the rounds at award shows, won The BERNINA Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Award at Pacific International Quilt Festival 2024 last month. This quilt, featuring a high-concept story and 2094 individual fabric pieces, just needs to be seen to be believed. Want to guess what it's about? We'll let Kestrel explain it:

"Only two guys with more muscles than brains would think it's a good idea to strap a steam-powered, propeller-driven flying machine on the back of a dog, but every society has its idiots. At least in this one, Lucky is having the time of his life! (And he makes it safely back to ground, despite his not-too-bright owners.)"

Take a look at the quilt for yourself, and then after admiring it learn more about it by watching Kestrel's show here at The Quilt Show, A Mod Podge Appliqué Technique and Fabric Selection with Kestrel Michaud | Embroidery Hoop Quilting with Sarah Vedeler, where she actually debuted this quilt for the first time.

And if you can't enough of Lucky and his antics, spend some more time with him and complete a puzzle of the quilt!

Textile Talks: Beyond the Surface - Contemporary Artists and Printed Textiles

Open Your Eyes and See "Beyond" What You Think is Possible

Presented by the Surface Design Association: "Three artists from the Beyond the Surface: Contemporary Artists and Printed Textiles exhibition will discuss their work. Using various techniques and materials, these artists transform fabric-based prints into meditations on personal, political, and social conditions. Their work expands notions of what a printed textile is and can be within a fine art context, revealing the possibilities for conceptual expression and meaning that uniquely exist in the overlap between media."

Register today and watch when this episode airs this Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 2 PM EDT.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Beautiful "Sunset"

"Sunset Over The Lotus Pond" by Rami Kim

In her childhood memories, Rami has a vision of a beautiful sunset over a lotus blossom, so she tried to capture the mesmerizing colors of it in her quilt, Sunset Over The Lotus Pond. All of the designs on the quilt were created using free motion machine embroidery, they were not digitized or created on a computer.
