What size needle should we use in our domestic sewing machine with the 80 and 60 weight thread?

I have an Eleanor Burns Flying Geese Ruler. It includes a 2" by 4" piece. Could I use the top of the ruler (peak) to square up the top since it has the 1/4 inch line?

I would like to copy the blog to have it handy as I cut out and make the units. Is there an easy way or do I just cut and paste into word?
