The Quilt Show Puzzle: "Legacy" by Margaret Willingham
Do a puzzle of Margaret Willingham's quilt, Legacy.
Legacy is a design that Margaret created from a family scherenschnitte, which is a paper-cutting design that comes from the Pennsylvania Dutch Heritage, which originally came from both the Swiss and German traditions in Europe. These designs were done with paper folding and small sharp scissors and used to celebrate births, weddings, and other occasions in life. The scherenschnitte featured in Legacy was created from a birth announcement for Margaret's ancestor who was born September 19, 1817. The original design that the quilt was based on was cut using pinking shears. Since Margaret didn't want to stitch all those designs using zigzags, she honored the original by doing the border in zigzags.
