Featured Quilt - One Last Look at Best of Show Winner

As we prepare to announce the winners of the Houston International Quilt Festival 2024 (more on that below), we thought we'd have last year's winner take a victory lap.  Here is Monkeys in My Hair (Evie) by Deborah S. Hyde, which has won numerous other awards as well.

Go deep into the quilt and see if you can spot all of the details because it's here where you'll figure out where the quilt got its name. Deborah says, "Monkeys in My Hair has been my most ambitious project so far. There are 2 monkeys in her hair, but can you count the birds? The butterflies? The Frogs? The dragonflies? Even I have not taken time to add up the bees, flies, and ladybugs!"

Our New Show with Carol Moellers Debuts This Sunday!

Join the Batik Bonanza

On the next Quilt Show, we're going batty for batik. So much so that we're devoting an entire show to this. Meet batik fabric and pattern designer Carol Moellers, and see why eighty percent of the fabric she works with now is batik. Plus, if you haven't considered using batik for appliqué, Carol's showing you why it's the perfect choice.

Then, Ricky invited the TQS cameras to follow him along to the Shalawalla gallery in La Veta, Colorado where his friends Jonathan and Beth Evans, who are world-renowned batik artists, are making art like you have never seen. They even warmed up the wax and gave us a demo on how batik art is made.

Watch Carol, and Jonathan and Beth Evans, in How To Use Batik for Appliqué with Carol Moellers | Learn the Batik Process with Jonathan and Beth Evans, when it debuts this Sunday, October 13, 2024.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Another Houston Best of Show Winner

"Chihuly's Gondola" by Melissa Sobotka

Hard to believe, but it's been more than 10 years since Chihuly's Gondola by Melissa Sobotka won Best of Show at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2013.

Based on a photo she had taken at the The Dallas Arboretum in 2012 at the Dale Chihuly exhibit, Melissa was taken by Chihuly's artistry and mastery of glass to create Chihuly's Gondola. Following the wise advice of learning from the best, Melissa was able to learn how to incorporate highlights, shadows, and reflections in her quilt based on Chihuly's art, creating the depth you wouldn't normally see in a 2D medium.

See this quilt and more of Melissa's work in How to Create Photo Imagery Quilts with Melissa Sobotka.
