Featured Quilt - Third Place Abstract at Houston 2024

The beauty of an abstract quilt is that it can represent many things. For example, the flow of getting through a day, or fighting the flow as we work toward a goal. Barbara Triscari's quilt, Life's Paths XXVIII: Flow, is one such example. It won Third Place in the Abstract category (Sponsored by Sew Steady) at the 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival. Congratulations Barbara!

Judith Ahlborn's "Sightseeing in New Orleans" Quilt at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024

In Case You Missed It

During last Monday's LIVE, Alex featured an interview between TQS' Lilo Bowman and textile artist Judith Ahlborn. In it, they discussed her quilt, Sightseeing in New Orleans, which was featured at the 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival as part of the Tactile Architecture exhibit. Here is the full interview between the two in case you missed Alex's LIVE, or your just want to enjoy this lively chat again in which Judith talks about her process in the creation of the quilt.

Learn more about Judith and how she creates her quilts by watching her right here at The Quilt Show in How to Create Digital Collage Quilts with Judy Ahlborn.

The Costume Design of "Wicked" The Movie

We're Not In Kansas Anymore, We're In Hollywood

One of the movie events of the season was released this past Friday as Wicked, the film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, made its debut. This retelling of the story of the witches of Oz needed someone to bring its fantastic and larger-than-life design to life, and who better than Tony Award-Winning Costume Designer of Hamilton, and the most recent version of West Side StoryPaul Tazewell. Join Paul as he speaks with InStyle and breaks down his vision for the outfits for all of the main characters in this enthralling peek behind the curtain (but pay no attention to the man behind it).

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A "Mosaic" That Moves

"Improv Mosaic #3" by Lorraine Woodruff-Long

Improv Mosaic #3 is part of Lorraine's Polychrome series of quilts. She says of this particular one in the series, "Using variations on a traditional log-cabin quilt block and small solid fabric scraps recycled from other projects, I sought to create a quilt with pulsing energy and color. With the self-imposed parameter to limit block sizes to 9, 6 and 3 inches, each block is developed using as much variety in color, “wonky” sizes and contrast as possible, to create an image that pops and moves. The improvisational nature is furthered by a random, puzzle-piece layout."
